About the Wine School

Established in 2005, the Ashburton Wine School offers wine courses and tastings for beginners to would-be sommeliers as well as professional courses for career-based training. Our Course Tutors are wine experts and well respected in their discipline.

If you are passionate about wine or just want to know your way around a wine menu, there is a course to suit you. Our classes are small, relaxed and enjoyable and, like the cookery courses, we have a practical and easy style of tuition which is designed to give you the maximum enjoyment of your time with us.

All our courses are designed to improve your appreciation and experience of wine. We will teach you to use all of your senses to understand what it is we enjoy about food and drink, what are the indicators of quality or lack of it, and also to verbalise our feelings and understanding of wines.

A Unique Learning Approach

You will assess wines, by tasting a lot of wines blind – so that you do not have any preconceptions about how the wine will taste, and finally and most importantly by letting you assess and remember the wines in your own terms without any auto-suggestion from us! We do not go down the route of suggesting that a wine shows ten different floral aromas, which you then immediately pick out – we let you make up your own mind about what a wine displays, and then we discuss it as a group.

We improve your experience of wine by introducing you to wines that you probably have not tried before, in this way you can come away from our courses with an expanded list of wines you really enjoy, or alternatively you may identify some wines that you may want to miss out in the future – it is all good experience.

All our courses are delivered to small groups – maximum 10 people. In this way we can allow for the variations in learner expectations, and develop a group within which everyone can play a part in developing wine discussion and share experiences. Many wine courses delivered to more learners that this are unable to achieve this – they become more of a lecture.
