We have been successfully running cookery courses 7 days a week, 350 days a year across 2 training kitchens for the last 5 years, and are one of the most successful cookery schools in the country. In 2009 we expect to welcome over 7000 students to our cookery school.

Professional Chef Tutors

4. Professional chef tutors

When you choose a cookery school you need to be sure that the training you are going to receive is to the highest standard. At the Ashburton Cookery School, all of our tutors are professional chefs with extensive experience in catering, working as head chefs in highly rated restaurants. They are also trained NVQ tutors, with a wealth of experience in training and inspiring students - from beginner to advanced cooks. We believe the quality of training offered by our professional chef tutors is unrivaled amongst cookery schools, and is the reason so many of our students come back to us.

Groups

5. Small group sizes

We have heard of some cookery schools delivering courses to groups of up to 40 people at a time. At the Ashburton Cookery School the average group size is 12 students. Our experienced chef tutors know that not everyone learns at the same pace, or in the same way, and so whilst you will work together as a group and in pairs, you will also receive plenty of individual attention from your chef tutors.

6. Hands-on training

At the Ashburton Cookery School we believe the best way to learn to cook is by actually cooking not watching. Our courses are geared to maximising the amount of practical cookery you will perform during each day. All ingredients are pre-prepared for you for the start of each day, washing up is taken care of, and a kitchen assistant works to assist the chef and students throughout the day.

Our kitchens are designed to feel as close to a home kitchen as possible and you can be sure that any skills or recipes you learn with us can be just as easily replicated at home as in a professional kitchen.

Since 2003 we have been committed to using the finest quality, ethically sourced produce we can. The quality of ingredients in Devon is outstanding and we are lucky to have some fantastic suppliers right on our doorstep in Ashburton. Our food is grown and sourced locally as much as possible to reduce 'food miles' and to support local producers. We insist on knowing the provenance of our food, and that it is sustainable and ethically produced. The difference in quality can be tasted in every dish. In 2007 we were awarded a silver Green Tourism award for our commitment to our environment policy.

Practical Cookery

8. Practical cookery you will use

All of our courses have been designed to be as accessible and practical as possible for preparation at home. The ingredients we use are easily sourced from everyday suppliers, and you wont find a focus on rare or exotic ingredients that often take longer to find than to make the recipe itself. For any 'out-of-the-ordinary' ingredients, we will always recommend another alternative that you can find easily. We are also conscious that food budgets need to go further these days, and develop our recipes to be affordable a well as delicious.

Students tell us that they enjoy the warm and friendly environment at the Cookery School and they like the sense of 'ownership' of the space they are working in and staying in. There are plenty of quiet areas, both inside and outside for breaks during and after your course, and at the end of a thrilling day in the kitchen, the picturesque town of Ashburton offers some good pubs, restaurants and shops to explore.
